What is chiropractic
Chiropractic is a health-care profession that focuses on maintaining the integrity of the spine to allow the nervous system to communicate optimally. Chiropractors are focused on the preservation and restoration of health by preventing, detecting and addressing subluxation through chiropractic adjustments.
Chiropractors focus on the root cause of your symptoms and address it through a holistic approach.
What training do Chiropractors receive?
Before entering the graduate program as a chiropractor, you would need to meet the pre-requisite of 90 semester hours of pre-medical undergraduate eduaction. The chiropractic program is approximately a 5-year program condensed into a year round 3-4 year period averaging about 4,400 to 5,200 of chiropractic education hours. Students will have to pass all 4 National Boards of Chiropractic Examination before applying for a licensure in whichever state they choose to practice.
Who needs Chiropractic care?
Please note that the most important and complicated system in our body is the brain and nervous system. It is so important that it is barricaded and protected by the skull and spine. Physical, chemical and social stressors lead to subluxations which affects the neuromusculoskeletal structures resulting in symptoms or poor function. Chiropractic care is beneficial for patients of all ages. We are able to provide care for newborn patients to patients who are over 100 years old.
Is Chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic is known to be the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies known to help with neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Chiropractors have an excellent safety record. It is crucial that you discuss your health history thoroughly with your Chiropractor to reveal any potential health risk.
Does an adjustment hurt
Chiropractic adjustments are usually done by hand and/or instrument-based with a high velocity low amplitude approach. If you are receiving your adjustment for the first time, it may be startling at first since you may experience some cavitation (noise). Depending on the state the patient is in, pain during an adjustment rarely occurs. Each patient responds differently to the re-alignment of the spine and may experience some side effects. Common side effects from an adjustment are being lightheaded, soreness, stiffness or aches which may last up to 24 hours while other may feel immediate relief.
What is subluxation and can I tell if I have subluxations?
Subluxation occurs when one or more of your bones have moved out of its juxtaposition to other bones affecting the biomechanics of the joints and neuromuscular structures.
Subluxations are not detectable on your own. In fact, we only feel about 10% of our nervous system. The human body is remarkable and responds to asymmetry by compensating. When your body compensates to avoid pain or flare ups, your center of gravity is altered. Overtime without addressing the compensation, you may begin to feel the aches, pain and or pinched nerve. Chiropractors specializes in detecting and addressing the subluxation before the body decides to flare up. Do not wait to experience pain to see a chiropractor, the key is maintenance.
When will I feel better?
It is difficult to state when you are going to feel better. Every patient comes in with different symptoms and lifestyles. We have had patients who immediately felt relief after their initial adjustment while others may take weeks to months to experience relief. Subluxations does not occur overnight; it is a gradual progress that may have started months or years before you experience pain.
Once you start going, do you have to go forever?
Not true, you have every right to decline or cease care. Patients choose to continue care because they know the benefits of chiropractic and want to optimize their health by maintaining care. You only get one spine, you can cut into it, fuse it or medicate it but choosing those routes can permanently destroy the normal function of that segment or joint. Why would you want to wait for such procedures when you could have prevented such measures in the first place?
If the last statement is still confusing than think about cars for a second. Majority of the population owns a car or knows someone that has one. As owners, they need to have maintenance performed on it from time to time. Maintenance may include oil change, tire change and rotation, replacement of oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and so forth. Imagine if you decide to neglect all of these, what do you think will happen to the car? For example, neglecting to change your oil may result in engine failure and you would need to bring it to a mechanic. Your mechanic may inspect your vehicle and have no choice but to provide two options for you, replace the engine or replace your car. At that moment, you might want to ask yourself if it was worth it to neglect such preventative measures. These decisions are completely up to you!
Can I adjust myself?
You cannot safely adjust yourself, in fact we highly advise you to not ever self-manipulate as it can be harmful. Bending and twisting the spine to get the “popping” sounds provides temporarily relief by stimulating the nerves responsible to suppress pain. In reality, self-manipulating can cause serious injuries such as ligament instability, muscle injuries or even strokes. Chiropractors are doctors trained in the science, art and philosophy of Chiropractic. Call your local chiropractor today for any questions or concerns.
What makes us special or different?
In our office, we look at the overall picture of what could be contributing to your symptoms and how to address and prevent future episodes. We are confident in our skills to provide the utmost quality care. When warranted, we are able to perform x-ray examination to further analyze your skeletal structure.
The value of an X-ray examination is to provide data for the doctor to recommend a care plan and to educate the patient about the results. Since opening, we have had several patients come through our office for a second opinion. X-rays findings showed spondylolysis, fractured pars of the vertebrae!
Our goal is to address the root of your symptoms and prevent future flare up. By doing so, we spend quality time with our patients and provide thorough chiropractic care. We also offer Foundation Training. These exercises are aimed to train you on how to use your body correctly and to tap into your innate power and strength.
