The US is among the wealthiest nations in the world but is far from the healthiest. The leading cause of death in America is heart disease, which contributes to 1 in 4 deaths killing about 610,000 Americans per year. Over 54% of children in the US are diagnosed with a chronic illness. 6 of 10 American adults are diagnosed with a chronic illness or disease that they will never recover from. In comparison to other countries, America spends twice as much money on health care (17% of GDP) and is ranked 1st in chronic disease, obesity and diabetes. The United States makes up 4.25% of the total world population and consume over 70% of all pharmaceutical drugs globally!
The CDC states that up to 40% of annual deaths from each of the five leading causes are preventable. Heart disease, cancer, accidents, chronic lower respiratory disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in the US. Are we proactive in response to the information we have? I am positive that implementing preventative measures and developing healthy habits will save us thousands of dollars and most importantly create the ability to live a healthy lifestyle. We should be moving in ways that restore proper body biomechanics, instead we sit. We sit CONSTANTLY!
Let us refresh our minds about human anatomy. Whenever you look at a person from the front/back, their spine has to be straight. From a side view, we have specific curves that are crucial to help distribute our weight evenly and alleviate the tension on the nerves, muscles and joints. With correct alignment the brain is able to communicate to the rest of the body effectively and function optimally.
An average American sits about 13 hours/day. We sit driving, we sit countless hours behind a desk, and go home to sit more while watching tv or eating. Our bodies are designed to move. Lack of movement and constant stress leads to a cascade of health issues. Prolonged sitting causes certain muscles to weaken and waste away. Sitting decreases metabolism. Sitting makes all the snacks and sugar we eat to be stored as fat. Sitting causes premature degeneration, anxiety, and depression. This sedentary lifestyle is also linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, varicose veins and Deep Vein Thrombosis. This repetitive lifestyle is killing us!
Sitting slouched forward increases the pressure on your discs by 300% compared to when you stand. Your pelvis is tilted forward, hips and muscles become imbalanced, your shoulders and back are rounded, organs are crushed, and the vital capacity of our lungs are decreased while slouching.
The human body responds to asymmetry by compensating and moving away from pain. As your body becomes imbalanced, your bones are shifted out of alignment. This is called subluxation. When you don’t address the subluxation, your joints become restricted, nerve and circulatory flow is diminished, and your muscles are imbalanced which leads to typical complaints of headaches, numbness and tingling, neck pain, low back pain, arthritis, sciatica, depression, anxiety and so forth.
